Local Love: June Feature — Austin Sunshine Camps
There’s just something about summer camp.
The late-night campfire laughs. Canoes and sunscreen. Friendships made in a week that somehow last forever. The kind of confidence kids bring home after finally realizing, “Hey… I can do hard things.”
For many kids, summer camp is a core childhood memory. But for some families, overnight camp simply isn’t financially possible.
That’s where Austin Sunshine Camps comes in.
This month, as summer officially kicks off here in Central Texas, we wanted to spotlight an organization that is creating life-changing summer experiences for kids right here in our own community. And honestly? We can’t think of a better fit for June.
Who Is Austin Sunshine Camps?
Founded back in 1928, Austin Sunshine Camps has spent nearly 100 years serving youth in the Austin area through free overnight summer camp experiences. What originally began as a way to help undernourished children improve their health and spend time outdoors has evolved into an incredible organization focused on empowering kids through connection, leadership, confidence, and community.
Today, Austin Sunshine Camps provides completely free overnight camp experiences for children ages 8–15 who qualify for free or reduced lunch programs or are in foster care.
And when we say camp, we mean real camp.
Swimming. Hiking. Campfires. Canoes. Arts and crafts. Challenge courses. Team competitions. Lifelong friendships. The kind of summer memories every child deserves to experience.
The organization operates camps in both Zilker Park and at their beautiful Lake Travis location, giving campers the chance to unplug, explore, and simply be kids for a while.
More Than Just a Summer Camp
What we love most about Austin Sunshine Camps is that their mission goes far beyond just keeping kids busy during summer break.
Their goal is to create a safe place where children can grow, connect, and explore — while building confidence, leadership skills, independence, and relationships that continue long after camp ends.
Research consistently shows how impactful summer camp experiences can be for kids, especially when it comes to emotional development, confidence, teamwork, and resilience. Austin Sunshine Camps creates those opportunities for children who may otherwise never have access to them.
And the impact doesn’t stop after summer ends.
Through year-round programming and leadership opportunities, they continue investing in campers as they grow older. Their Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program helps former campers develop leadership skills and creates pathways for them to eventually return as camp staff and mentors themselves.
That full-circle impact is pretty incredible.
Programs Offered
Austin Sunshine Camps offers several programs designed to support campers beyond just one week away at camp.
Their core program provides free overnight camp experiences for children ages 8–15. Campers participate in outdoor adventures, sports, swimming, arts and crafts, leadership activities, and specialized camp tracks throughout the summer.
Austin Sunshine Camps also hosts family events, weekend camps, and year-round activities that help maintain connections and support for campers and their families beyond the summer months.
Their CIT program helps older campers transition into leadership roles by offering mentorship, training, and paid summer employment opportunities for teens interested in becoming future counselors and role models.
College students from schools like The University of Texas at Austin and Texas State University volunteer as counselors, mentors, and advocates for the organization while helping campers create unforgettable summer experiences.
Why We Chose Austin Sunshine Camps for June
June feels like the unofficial start of summer around here. School’s out, schedules get lighter, pools start filling up, and families begin making summer memories.
But while many kids are headed off to camps and vacations, not every child has access to those same experiences.
That’s why Austin Sunshine Camps felt like such a meaningful organization to feature this month.
They’re creating opportunities for kids to experience joy, confidence, friendship, adventure, and belonging — regardless of financial circumstances. And in a world where so many children are carrying heavy burdens at young ages, there’s something incredibly powerful about giving kids a safe place to simply laugh, play, grow, and dream bigger.
Honestly, every kid deserves at least one summer where they come home covered in sunscreen, exhausted, a little dirty… and completely confident in who they are becoming.
How You Can Get Involved
One of the best things about Austin Sunshine Camps is that there are so many ways for the community to support their mission.
From helping behind the scenes to volunteering directly with campers, volunteers are a huge part of what makes Austin Sunshine Camps possible.
Because camp is completely free for participating families, donations play a critical role in keeping these programs running. It costs approximately $1,500 to send one child to camp for a session.
Businesses can also partner with Austin Sunshine Camps through sponsorships, volunteer events, and community partnerships that directly support campers and programming.
Spread Awareness
Sometimes support starts with simply sharing their mission, following them on social media, or telling others about the incredible work they’re doing right here in Central Texas.

Final Thoughts
At the heart of it, Austin Sunshine Camps is about giving kids the opportunity to experience childhood fully — to build confidence, friendships, leadership skills, and memories that stay with them for years to come.
And we love organizations that invest in people early. Because when children are supported, encouraged, and given opportunities to grow, entire communities become stronger.
