March Featured Charity: Dress for Success Austin

Because it’s about so much more than a dress.

As part of our Local Love initiative — where we feature a different local charity each month throughout the year — March holds special meaning.

International Women’s Month is a time to celebrate strength, leadership, resilience, and growth. And we can’t think of a better organization to highlight than Dress for Success Austin.

They are meeting women wherever they are in their journey — and equipping them with the tools, confidence, and community to step into what’s next.

And that’s something worth amplifying.

Who They Are

Dress for Success was founded in 1996 by a college student who received $5,000 from her grandfather after he passed away and asked herself, “What can I do with this?”

She started in the basement of a church.

Today, Dress for Success is an international organization operating in 33 countries.

The Austin affiliate — founded in 2003 — is locally sustained and self-funded, meaning they are responsible for their own boutique, programming, fundraising, and operations right here in our community.

They are a small but mighty team of nine running an operation that serves over 1,400 women annually.

And their mission is simple and powerful:

A woman walking through their doors is the mission.

How They Help (It’s Beyond the Dress)

Yes, there is a styling component. But what they do goes far beyond that.

Dress for Success Austin offers 7 core workforce development programs, including:

Career readiness support including resumes, mock interviews, job search strategies, and ongoing coaching.

Specialized support for women veterans transitioning into civilian careers.
Each November on Veterans Day, local hairstylists and makeup artists volunteer their time to help these women feel fully prepared and confident. (Last year, Consuela donated 64 handbags for participants — how amazing is that?)

Offered in both English and Spanish, these programs equip women with tools to build financial confidence and long-term stability.

Women receive:

  • Two complete professional outfits
  • A pair of shoes
  • Three pieces of jewelry

It’s not about fashion — it’s about walking into an interview feeling prepared and seen.

And here’s something important:
There are no financial requirements to participate.

Any person seeking employment who identifies as a woman is eligible. If she wants help, they help her.

Many of their Success Members eventually come full circle and return as mentors and volunteers — which might be my favorite part.

Sustainability with Purpose

Another thing we love? Their commitment to sustainability.

Donations are used thoughtfully and responsibly. Items that aren’t appropriate for the boutique are repurposed rather than sent to landfill.

They even partner with a local yoga studio to sell donated fitness apparel — turning those proceeds back into funding for programs.

Everything has purpose.

Why This Matters

We talk a lot about confidence in real estate — helping clients make big decisions, step into new chapters, and build stability.

Dress for Success Austin is doing that for women navigating career transitions, financial hardship, military reintegration, and fresh starts.

They are meeting women wherever they are in their journey.

And that is something worth amplifying.
