How to Refinish Your Hardwood Floors
Hardwood floors are durable, versatile, and attractive. One of the best things about them is the fact that they can be refinished again and again. If you just moved into a new home with worn-out hardwood floors, consider refinishing them. It's not that hard to do yourself. Our real estate agents have seen plenty of DIY hardwood floor refinishing jobs that look pristine and professional. Here are some basic steps to follow if you decide to embark on this mission.
- Step 1: Sand Off the Old Finish
Before you apply a new finish, you need to remove the old one. The best way to do this is by sanding the old finish off. You can do this by hand, although it will take a long time. A better approach is to rent a floor sander. Most home improvement shops rent them out by the day.
As you sand, make sure you periodically stop and vacuum up the dust. Wear a face mask and goggles, so you don't get the dust in your eyes, nose, or mouth. Start with rough, 80-grit sandpaper, then follow up with finer, 50-grit sandpaper. Keep sanding until all the finish is gone. - Step 2: Fill Damaged Spots
Grab some wood filler in a color that matches your flooring, and apply it to any dings or dents. If needed, you can use a putty knife to push the filler into holes and then smooth it out. - Step 3: Wipe it Down
Once your holes are filled, use a damp cloth to gently wipe down the whole floor. You want to remove any last remnants of dust from the sanding. Let the floor dry completely, for at least a few hours, before moving on to Step 4. - Step 4: Apply the Stain
If you want to leave your floor natural and as-is, you can skip staining it and just apply the sealer at this point. But if you want to change the color of the floor, choose an oil-based stain in your preferred color.
Follow the instructions on the stain container to apply the product. Generally, you'll start in the furthest corner of the room and work your way towards the door. Apply stain to about 3 feet of flooring at a time, wiping up any excess after application. Keep a sponge handy to soak up any drips.
Let the floor dry for at least one day — two is better — after applying the stain. - Step 5: Apply Sealer
The sealer will protect your hardwood floor from moisture and stains. There are lots of floor sealing products out there, but polyurethane-based ones tend to work best. Vacuum the floor thoroughly before you apply the sealer. Any dust or debris will prevent it from adhering to the surface.
Apply the sealer using a large foam brush. Try to make your strokes as long and even as possible, as this will ensure an even coat of sealer. You may also use a sponge roller if preferred. Let the first coat dry. Then, lightly sand the polyurethane to roughen up the surface. Apply a second coat in the same manner as the first.
Let the sealer dry for at least 3 days before putting furniture or carpets in the room.
