Buying your first home in the Austin suburbs starts the same way for almost everyone: it's nearly midnight, you've got seventeen Zillow tabs open, and somewhere between a four-bedroom in Round Rock and a townhome in Pflugerville, you realize you have no idea where to actually start. The Austin suburbs are full of great options for first-time buyers. The problem isn't the inventory. It's the process, and nobody hands you a roadmap when you decide you're ready to buy.

One of my favorite things about living in the Greater Austin area is that you don't have to head into downtown Austin every time you want something fun to do.
Some of the communities surrounding Austin have really great downtown areas of their own—places where you can grab brunch, wander through locally owned shops, find a patio for a drink, catch live music, or make an entire Saturday out of doing a whole lot of nothing. (My favorite kind of Saturday.)
And they're all a little different.
Some are polished and bustling. Some still have that old-school Texas charm. And a few have changed so much in recent years that they're worth another visit if you haven't been in a while.
If I were picking five of my favorite downtowns around Greater Austin, these are the ones I'd put on the list.
