April
24

Welcome to the vibrant city of Georgetown, Texas, where every spring, the streets burst into a riot of color and festivity with the annual Red Poppy Festival. This beloved event, steeped in local history and charm, celebrates the beauty of the iconic red poppy flower while bringing together residents and visitors alike for a weekend of fun, music, and community spirit. This year is the 25th annual Red Poppy Festival so the city of Georgetown is gearing up for three days full of red poppy fun!

The Origin Story

During World War I, seeds from poppies in Europe found their way to Georgetown, Texas, thanks to Henry Purl Compton, affectionately known as "Okra," a member of the American Expeditionary Forces. He sent them to his mother, who planted them at her home on 507 East 7th Street. From there, the poppies spread naturally, aided by birds, bees, and people, throughout Old Town and along the riverbanks.

In 1990, Georgetown was officially recognized as the "Red Poppy Capital of Texas" by local residents and the Texas Legislature. For over a century, red poppies have graced Georgetown's landscape, flourishing in various locations such as street and highway right-of-ways, vacant lots, parks, and citizens' yards. Georgetown stands out as one of the rare places in the United States where red poppies self-seed annually, creating a breathtaking display each April. This natural phenomenon is celebrated annually with the lively Red Poppy Festival.

Blooming Festivities

As April rolls around, Georgetown comes alive with the sights and sounds of the Red Poppy Festival. The festivities kick off with a vibrant parade, where floats adorned with red poppies wind their way through downtown, accompanied by marching bands, local organizations, and cheerful spectators lining the streets.

Following the parade, the historic downtown square transforms into a bustling marketplace, filled with artisan vendors, delicious food stalls, and activities for all ages. From handcrafted jewelry to savory Texas barbecue, there's something to tempt every palate and delight every shopper.

Live music is another highlight of the festival, with multiple stages hosting an eclectic lineup of performers throughout the weekend. Whether you're into country, rock, blues, or folk, you'll find toe-tapping tunes to enjoy as you soak up the festive atmosphere. This year's headliner is non other than country music star Easton Corbin.

Family Fun and Community Spirit

One of the most endearing aspects of the Red Poppy Festival is its focus on family-friendly entertainment and community involvement. Children can partake in interactive games, face painting, and pony rides, while adults can unwind with a cold beverage in the beer garden or take part in a friendly game of cornhole.

Community organizations and local businesses also play a significant role in the festival, showcasing their services and products while fostering a sense of camaraderie among residents. It's a time for neighbors to come together, share stories, and celebrate all that makes Georgetown such a special place to call home.

If you're thinking about joining in on the fun this weekend, I've included a snippet schedule of events below. Preserving Nature's Beauty

Beyond the revelry and merriment, the Red Poppy Festival serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving our natural heritage. The red poppy flower, with its striking crimson petals, not only adds a splash of color to the landscape but also symbolizes resilience and renewal. By honoring this iconic bloom, the festival encourages stewardship of the environment and appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us.

Whether you're a longtime resident or a first-time visitor, the festival offers a glimpse into the heart and soul of Georgetown, where tradition, culture, and natural beauty converge in perfect harmony. Come be a part of the celebration as we paint the town red for the 25th annual Red Poppy Festival and celebrate the enduring legacy of the red poppy flower in the heart of Texas.
