Our real estate agents are deeply rooted in the Central Texas community and they get to see firsthand what makes this area such a special place to live. It's not just the beautiful homes and friendly faces; it's the rhythm of our life here. And right now, that rhythm is the familiar, exciting beat of the back-to-school drum!

The end of summer means one last dip in Barton Springs, a final evening stroll through your favorite park, and, of course, the annual Texas tradition that every parent circles on their calendar: Tax-Free Weekend.

It's a fantastic opportunity to save money, but it can also be a little overwhelming with the crowds and the traffic. That's why we've put together this local guide to help you navigate the weekend like a pro, whether you're in Hutto, Leander, or anywhere in between.

The Official Details: Mark Your Calendars!

First, let's get the essential information down.

  • When: The 2025 Sales Tax Holiday is scheduled for Friday, August 8, through Sunday, August 10.

  • What Qualifies: Generally, most clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks priced under $100 are exempt from state and local sales tax. That's a savings of up to 8.25% in our area!

  • The Fine Print: The $100 limit applies to individual items. For example, you can buy five shirts that are each $20, and the entire purchase will be tax-free. However, a single pair of jeans priced at $110 would be fully taxable. The exemption also applies to online purchases made from Texas-based businesses during this weekend.

For a complete list of what is and isn't included, it's always a good idea to check the Texas Comptroller's website before you head out.

Your Local Shopping Playbook: Where to Go in Williamson & Travis Counties

Cedar Park & Leander: For families in Cedar Park and Leander, convenience is key. The Parke and 1890 Ranch offer a fantastic one-stop-shop experience. With anchors like Target, Kohl's, Old Navy, and Dick's Sporting Goods, you can get almost everything on your list without driving all over town. These centers are easy to navigate and have plenty of parking, which is a huge bonus on a busy weekend.

Round Rock: Round Rock is a true retail powerhouse. The Round Rock Premium Outlets are a major destination for a reason. You'll find deals on top of deals at stores like Nike, Gap, and Carter's. My advice? Go early! For a more traditional shopping experience, La Frontera has a massive collection of big-box stores perfect for stocking up on supplies and clothes.

Georgetown: Georgetown offers a wonderful blend of modern convenience and historic charm. Wolf Ranch Town Center is an open-air mall with all the essentials you need for school clothes and supplies. For a unique touch, don't forget to explore the boutiques around the Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas. You might find a unique backpack or first-day-of-school outfit while supporting a local small business!

Pflugerville & Hutto: Residents of Pflugerville and Hutto have a gem in the Stone Hill Town Center. This sprawling complex has everything from Target and Ross to Best Buy for any tech needs. It's perfectly positioned to serve these rapidly growing communities, making your back-to-school run efficient and successful.

North Austin: If you're looking for a premier shopping experience, North Austin delivers. The Domain and The Domain NORTHSIDE offer a mix of mid-range and high-end stores. While you might be hunting for deals at H&M or Zara, the kids will love the green spaces and splash pads for a mid-shopping break. Nearby, The Arboretum provides another excellent option with stores like Gap and Barnes & Noble.

Pro-Tips for a Stress-Free Spree

Our real estate agents help people navigate big decisions, they know a little planning goes a long way. Here are our tips for conquering tax-free weekend:

  1. Make a List (and Measure!): Go through your school's supply list and your kids' closets before you leave the house. Measure your kids' height, inseam, and shoe size to avoid crowded dressing rooms.

  2. Divide and Conquer: If you have a partner or older kids, split the list. One person can tackle school supplies while the other handles clothes and shoes.

  3. Go Early or Go Late: The stores are busiest from about 11 AM to 4 PM. Try to get your shopping done first thing in the morning or in the last few hours before closing.

  4. Shop Online: Remember, online purchases from Texas businesses qualify! Enjoy the air conditioning and shop from the comfort of your own home.

  5. Make it Fun! This time of year is about more than just shopping. It's about getting excited for the new school year. Pair your shopping trip with lunch at a local restaurant or a treat from Amy's Ice Creams.

Thinking of buying or selling a home in the Central Texas Area? Let's chat! Our real estate agents would love to help you find a home that fits your lifestyle in Austin, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Leander, Round Rock, Hutto, Pflugerville—or anywhere in between.

Happy shopping!
